Recently, pirate boarding incidents have occurred frequently in the busy international shipping lane of the Singapore Strait, posing a great threat to maritime transport safety and causing great concern among the shipping industry and relevant authorities.
On the evening of 2 February, a frightening maritime crisis unfolded in the Phillip Straits. A Malaysian-flagged product oil carrier was travelling east at 7 knots. When it reached 4 nautical miles (about 7.4 kilometres) north of the Indonesian island of Kapalayeni, six vicious knife-wielding pirates managed to board the ship. The tanker's relatively low drydock of 2.3 metres gave the pirates an opportunity to take advantage of the ship's relatively low height.
Just 15 minutes before the incident, another Norwegian-flagged bulk carrier not far away had not been spared. Only two nautical miles (about 3.2 kilometres) away, four assailants armed with knives and similar firearms boarded the bulk carrier. The bulk carrier was sailing at 9.6 knots and had a dry beam of 5.1 metres, but still did not escape the pirates.
On the afternoon of 28 January, a Greek tanker was boarded by two knife-wielding pirates while it was sailing approximately three nautical miles north-west of Pepin Island in the Singapore Strait. The tanker was travelling eastbound along the navigable slipway at a speed of 9.7 knots and a beam of 6.35 metres. Fortunately, the incident did not result in any casualties or damage to property and the tanker eventually entered the Singapore anchorage safely.
On 25 January, a bulk carrier was boarded by pirates in the Phillipines. The pirates gained access to the engine room and, although it is uncertain whether they were armed, the whole process was frightening. It is fortunate that no more serious incidents followed, but this incident has also sounded the alarm for the safety of maritime navigation.
On 7 January, another bulk carrier was boarded and hijacked by four knife-wielding men in the waters of the Philip Channel in the Singapore Strait, about 12 nautical miles north-west of Pulau Terung Island in Indonesia. The bulk carrier had a low dry beam of about 6.25 metres, which may have been one of the reasons why it was targeted by the pirates.
The Straits of Singapore, one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, has seen frequent occurrences of piracy. These recurring news incidents are just the tip of the iceberg of the piracy problem in Singapore. As a matter of fact, Singapore piracy incidents over the years have had complex quantitative trends, and the impact and harm brought about by these incidents are even more extensive and far-reaching, involving a number of important areas such as shipping safety, economic losses, and safety of crew members' lives, etc., which are worthy of in-depth exploration.
