On September 2, the waters near Yemen saw attacks on oil tankers and merchant ships, sparking considerable international attention. The attacks exacerbate both maritime safety and regional tensions.

On Monday, a Panama-flagged oil tanker and a Saudi-flagged oil tanker were attacked in the Red Sea, about 70 nautical miles northwest of Yemen's small port of Saleef. Both tankers were carrying crude oil—one with one million barrels and the other with two million barrels. The Houthis have claimed responsibility for the missile and drone attack on the Panama-flagged tanker but did not address the Saudi-flagged tanker. Thankfully, despite sailing close to each other during the attacks, the tankers continued their voyages without major damage or injuries.

On the same day, two separate maritime incidents were reported. A merchant vessel was struck by two unidentified projectiles 70 nautical miles northwest of Saleef. During a subsequent crew inspection, a third explosion occurred in the vicinity. Fortunately, there were no casualties, and the vessel was able to resume its voyage. In a related event, another merchant vessel was hit by a drone 58 nautical miles west of Hudaydah. Fortunately, this vessel is also continuing its journey to its next port without any reported injuries.
