On 30 August, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will break ground for India's biggest port project at Vadhavan near Dahanu in Maharashtra's Palghar district, marking the launch of India's largest port project. The project marks a significant milestone in India's infrastructure development and represents a major step forward in the country's role in global shipping and trade.

On June 20, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Modi approved the plan to construct a major all-weather port in Vadavan, in a bid to bolster India’s growing maritime demands and enhance its presence on the global stage.

早在6月20日，由莫迪总理领导的联邦内阁批准了在瓦达万建设一个全天候大型港口的计划。该港口的定位是为印度不断增长的海运需求提供支持，从而增强其全球竞争力。

To achieve this ambitious goal, Vadhvan Port Project Ltd. (VPPL), established by Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB), will be responsible for the port's construction and operation. VPPL will be responsible for building the essential infrastructure, including breakwater, dredging, shore protection bund, tug berth, and approach trestles at an estimated cost of ₹43,622 crore. The project marks a significant milestone in India's port development strategy as it is the first instance in which the entities owned by the Union government and state government are jointly developing a greenfield port.

The Vadhavan Port will build a 20meter deep waterway to accommodate the world's largest ships through the reclamation of 1,448 hectares from the sea, thereby reducing logistics costs and avoiding transshipment. The port will feature nine container terminals, each 1,000 meters long, and four multipurpose berths, including those for liquid cargo, rollon/rolloff ships, and coast guard vessels, with the capacity to handle container vessels carrying over 24,000 twentyfoot equivalent units.

瓦达万港（Vadhavan port）将通过填海获得1,448公顷土地，形成20米的深水航道，以此容纳全球最大船舶，降低物流成本并减少转运次数。港口将设有九个集装箱码头，每个码头长度为1,000米，同时配备四个多用途泊位，包括液体货物泊位、滚装船泊位和海岸警卫队泊位，计划容纳24,000个标准箱的集装箱船。

To ensure the port's connectivity, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will invest ₹17,650 crore and ₹28,810 crore, respectively, to develop road infrastructure linking the port. Additionally, the Ministry of Railways will integrate the port with the existing rail network and upcoming dedicated freight corridors. The port will be situated just 12 kilometers from the dedicated freight corridor and 22 kilometers from the MumbaiBaroda Expressway, significantly enhancing its strategic importance and commercial potential.

为了保障港口的交通连通性，印度道路运输和公路部（MoRTH）以及国家公路管理局（NHAI）将分别投资176.5亿卢比和288.1亿卢比，负责建设港口与公路网络。同时，铁道部将确保港口与现有铁路网络以及未来专用铁路货运走廊无缝衔接。未来，瓦达万港距离专用铁路货运走廊仅12公里，距离孟买巴罗达高速公路仅22公里，这将大大提升港口的战略地位和商业价值。

The port is expected to be completed by 2030, with a projected cumulative cargo throughput of 298 million tons per year, including around 23.2 million TEUs of container handling capacity. Once completed, the port is set to emerge as the largest in India.

Managed by the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPTA), the port's major exports include textiles, sports items, carpets, textile machinery, boneless meat, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals while its primary imports are chemicals, machinery, plastics, electric motors, vegetable oils, and nonferrous metals such as aluminum.

Additionally, it has roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) berths designed for the handling of vehicles such as cars.
