Student protests in Bangladesh have led to port backlogs and week-long berthing delays

Chittagong, Bangladesh's largest seaport, resumed container transportation on July 25th after a 6-day closure. The port closure has had a cascading effect on the port's transportation trucks and ships marked by severe congestion at the Chittagong container yard and ships queuing up at anchorages outside the port and berthing delays of up to 9 days!

Omar Faruk, a spokesperson for the Chittagong Port Authority, indicated that they could transport about 2,500 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) from the port yard from Tuesday night to Wednesday morning. He noted that there were 41,459 TEUs of containers stranded at the port yard on Wednesday morning. Still, he hoped another 3,500 containers’ delivery on Wednesday to alleviate the congestion at the port yard, as the limited space has made it difficult to unload containers from ships to the port yard.

Officials from various shipping companies have cited three main reasons for the prolonged berthing times. First, the unrest and curfews in the port city have suspended deliveries leading to limited space and a ban on unloading containers from ships. Second, the unrest disrupted operations outside the wharf, preventing the scheduling of export goods and making ship operators have to postpone their scheduled departure times. Third, the internet outage led to ship agents’ failure to obtain timely ship unloading permits, thus having no access to documents sharing with the port, such as shipping details, ship berthing procedures, etc. In addition, power outages made it impossible for the Chittagong Port Authority to obtain the necessary government approvals for unloading dangerous goods.
