Mozambique is located in southeastern Africa, bordered by Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi to the west, and Tanzania to the north. The official language is Portuguese. The country's main ports include Maputo, Beira, and Nacala, which can transfer goods to inland countries and ports such as Lusaka in Zambia, Blantyre in Malawi, and Harare in Zimbabwe. Mozambique has relatively relaxed weight restrictions for transit goods, compared to Tanzania, another major transit country in East Africa, which has stricter restrictions. Therefore, customers with heavier goods find it more suitable to transit through Mozambique to reach inland countries.
On December 31, the Mozambique Business Association Federation announced that stores, warehouses, and factories in the southern city of Matola and other areas were severely damaged and looted last week. This incident has left 12,000 Mozambican workers unemployed, dealing a heavy blow to the local economy.
Honorio Manuel, the Vice President of the Industry Committee of the Mozambique Business Association Federation, revealed to the media that rioters attacked and plundered more than 500 companies. He stated, "Approximately 40% of Mozambique's industrial structure has been damaged, which has had a significant impact on our industrial base." In terms of economic losses, recent surveys indicate that Mozambican businesses have already suffered losses of over 24.8 billion meticais (approximately 390 million US dollars at the current exchange rate), but this figure does not include the losses caused by last week's large-scale looting and destruction, so the total loss is certainly higher. The employment situation is also grim. Manuel warned, "Over 12,000 Mozambicans have lost their jobs due to violent demonstrations. If the unrest intensifies, this number will continue to rise. Among the 500 companies that were looted and damaged, most will not be able to resume production and operations quickly, leading to shortages in goods supply and potential price surges for the few remaining products, which will undoubtedly affect the lives of every Mozambican."
Furthermore, the Mozambique-South Africa Chamber of Commerce stated after a meeting on December 30 that due to transportation disruptions, ships loaded with food and other goods have been stranded at the Port of Maputo for several weeks. Minister Moreira noted, "Trucks are struggling to deliver goods to their intended destinations, especially rice and other supplies. After the rice warehouse was looted last week, demand has surged, but the goods cannot leave the port because the unrest has prevented trucks from operating normally."
