The Port of Fremantle is expected to face a 48-hour strike by pilot boat operators and vessel traffic service officers, who are demanding an 18% salary boost over the next three years to align their wages with other ports in Western Australia. Analysts warn that the strike could lead to delays extending several weeks and trigger a ripple effect across Asia. The union has warned of the possibility of extending the strike if their wage demands are not met.

The strike has been sparked by a collapse in wage talks between the union and the port authority in which the union is demanding a pay increase of AUD 15,000 to AUD 20,000 on top of the base salary of approximately AUD 140,000 (USD 92,350). The union claims that its members' wages are AUD 50,000 lower than those of their counterparts at other ports.

The Australian Maritime Officers Union WA has notified the Fremantle Ports Authority that a strike will commence on Sunday morning. The 48-hour strike is expected to halt all vessel activities. Ships already docked will still have access to dock workers.

In an email to clients, Fremantle Ports noted that while vessels berthed in the port will continue with their scheduled cargo operations during the protected industrial action, ship movements to and from the berths may face disruptions.

As reported by the Fremantle Ports Authority, approximately 20 vessels, including container ships and vehicle carriers, are scheduled to enter the port during the strike period. While vessels already docked at the port will continue with their planned cargo operations, the movement of ships in and out of the port will face restrictions. This means that vessels will be unable to dock or depart as planned, leading to disruptions in the port's scheduling and cargo handling activities.

Fremantle Port is located at the mouth of the Swan River, about 19 kilometers from the city of Perth. Covering an area of 353 hectares, the port features 11 berths along a 3.3-kilometer shoreline.

The liquid cargo terminal is dedicated to the unloading and storage of petroleum, chemicals, and liquefied natural gas.
